Description:
Instituted in 1865, this state university began as an agricultural and mechanical college. Its influence is much larger today, given that UK is the state's largest public school and its student body numbers over 24,000. Widely recognized for its superb basketball team (the Wildcats), the university also offers strong programs in communications, medicine, rural health, and pharmacy. Most of UK's libraries can be found on central campus, and athletic and medical facilities occupy south campus.
